This Sunday is Valentine’s Day, a day most of us love as it is a very special one to spend with your other half or your loved ones.Happy Valentine's - Hotel Angela Fuengirola

Jewelry, flowers, chocolate boxes, cards… Why do we exchange presents and celebrate love on this day?

It seems that Saint Valentine was a martyr who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers. These could not get married as Roman Emperor Claudius II believed that married men made no good soldiers.

According to the legend, Saint Valentine cut paper hearts and gave them to soldiers and Christians to remind them of God’s love, so this is possibly is the origin of the use of hearts on Saint Valentine’s Day.

On the other hand the greatest English poet of the Middle Ages and Father of English literature, Geoffrey Chaucer, was the first who associated Valentine’s Day with romantic love so by the 15th century, Saint Valentine’s Day had evolved into a day in which lovers expressed their love by sending cards, and presenting flowers and sweets.

Nowadays in the UK, an estimated 25 million cards are sent for this occasion and 1.3 billion pounds are spent on cards, chocolate, flowers and other gifts… impressive, right?

In Spain this special day is called “San Valentín” and it started to get celebrated by mid-20th Century, so compared to the U.K it is a quite recent holiday though it is celebrated in the same way.

If you and your partner are staying at Hotel Angela, your hotel in Fuengirola, on Valentine’s Day you will surely have a great time as our staff will put a lot of effort to make your day extra special.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
